What is a breast ultrasound?

Breast ultrasound uses sound waves to look inside the breast tissue. It tells a simple fluid-filled cyst from a solid lump, measures it, and describes its shape, margins and blood flow on colour Doppler. The scan also checks the lymph nodes in the armpit (axilla). At KDRC the standard study covers both breasts and both armpits.

Ultrasound and mammography are complementary. Ultrasound is the first choice for women under about 40, in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and to look at a specific lump; mammography remains important for screening older women.

Why do doctors order a breast ultrasound?

  • A breast lump, thickening or swelling.
  • Breast pain in one place that does not go away.
  • Nipple discharge, especially bloody, or a change in the nipple.
  • Redness, warmth and swelling suggesting mastitis or an abscess, particularly when breastfeeding.
  • A lump in the armpit.
  • Follow-up of known cysts or fibroadenomas, or of an abnormal mammogram.
  • To guide FNAC or biopsy of a lump.

How much does a breast ultrasound cost in Pokhara?

Understanding your results

Most breast lumps are not cancer: cysts, fibroadenomas and fibrocystic change are far more common. The report describes each finding and usually gives a BI-RADS category from 1 (normal) to 5 (highly suspicious), which guides the next step: routine care, a short-interval follow-up scan, or a needle sample. Any new lump should be checked by a doctor, even if an earlier scan was normal.

What to expect at KDRC

Register with your doctor's request and any earlier breast scans or mammograms. No fasting is needed; avoid lotion or powder on your chest that day. You undress to the waist in a private room and wear a gown; you are welcome to bring a female companion. You lie on your back with your arm raised above your head, which flattens the breast tissue. The radiologist moves the probe with warm gel systematically over each breast and armpit, paying extra attention to any lump you point out. The scan is painless and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Our team tells you when to collect the report, which you take back to your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a breast ultrasound cost in Pokhara?

Is breast ultrasound better than a mammogram?

They do different jobs. Ultrasound is best for young women, pregnancy and examining a specific lump. Mammography is the main screening test for older women and shows tiny calcifications. Your doctor may request one or both.

When in my cycle should I have the scan?

For a specific lump, do not delay. For general breast pain or lumpiness, the scan is often more comfortable about a week after your period starts, when the breasts are less tender.

Is a breast lump always cancer?

No. Most lumps are cysts, fibroadenomas or normal glandular tissue. However, every new lump should be examined by a doctor, and ultrasound helps decide whether a needle sample is needed.

Can I have a breast ultrasound while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes. Ultrasound uses no radiation and is the preferred breast test during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If breastfeeding, feeding or expressing just before the scan makes it more comfortable.
