What is a whole abdomen ultrasound?
A whole abdomen ultrasound is a painless imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create live pictures of the organs inside your tummy (abdomen). It is one of the most commonly requested scans in Nepal, often called a USG of the whole abdomen or a complete abdominal scan. The examination covers the upper abdomen — the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen and kidneys — as well as the lower abdomen and pelvis, including the urinary bladder and, in women, the uterus and ovaries, and in men, the prostate gland.
Because ultrasound uses sound waves rather than X-rays, there is no ionising radiation, which is one reason it is used so often and can be repeated when needed. At KDRC, the test is performed on a high-definition ultrasound system with colour Doppler, which can also assess blood flow in the large abdominal vessels when your doctor requests it. See all our ultrasound services.
Why do doctors order a whole abdomen ultrasound?
Doctors often choose ultrasound as the first imaging test because it is quick, safe, widely available and relatively inexpensive. Your doctor may request a whole abdomen ultrasound if you have:
- persistent or severe abdominal pain, colic or cramping
- bloating, indigestion or a feeling of fullness after meals
- jaundice — yellowing of the eyes or skin
- abnormal liver or kidney function blood tests
- urinary problems, burning while passing urine or blood in the urine
- suspected gallstones or kidney stones
- a lump, swelling or an enlarged organ felt during an examination
- unexplained fever, weight loss or anaemia that needs assessment
- a known condition requiring follow-up, such as fatty liver, cysts or stones
The scan can detect stones, cysts, fluid collections, fatty changes in the liver, and enlargement or structural changes in the organs. It cannot diagnose every illness on its own, and findings always need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and other tests. If reduced blood flow to the kidneys is suspected, your doctor may also request a dedicated renal Doppler study.

Understanding your results
After the scan, you receive a written report with images describing each organ examined and noting any findings, such as stones, cysts, fatty change, fluid or enlargement. A word of caution: a normal report is reassuring but does not exclude every possible condition, and an abnormal finding does not always mean serious disease. Always take the report back to the doctor who requested the scan, so it can be interpreted together with your symptoms, examination and blood tests.
Sometimes an ultrasound finding needs closer evaluation. Depending on what is seen and your clinical picture, your doctor may advise a CT scan, an MRI examination or a sampling test such as FNAC — all of which are available at KDRC.

How to prepare
- Fast for at least 6 hours before the scan; no food, milk or sugary drinks — small sips of plain water are usually fine.
- Avoid chewing gum and smoking on the day of the test, as gas reduces image quality.
- Drink several glasses of water about an hour before and hold your urine so the bladder is full for the pelvic views.
- Wear loose, two-piece clothing that gives easy access to your abdomen.
- Bring your doctor's prescription and any previous ultrasound, CT or MRI reports.
- Tell the staff when booking if you have diabetes or take insulin, so an early appointment can be arranged.

What to expect at KDRC
Register at reception with your doctor's request and any earlier reports. In the scan room you lie on your back and loosen your clothing so your abdomen is uncovered. Gel is applied and the radiologist moves the probe over your upper abdomen, then your lower abdomen and pelvis. You may be asked to take a deep breath and hold it, or roll onto your side, so organs behind the ribs and bowel gas come into view. The full bladder you arrived with is checked first, after which you can empty it if further views are needed. The scan is painless and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Afterwards you can eat and drink normally. Our team tells you when to collect your report.

How much does a whole abdomen ultrasound cost in Pokhara?
At KDRC in Pokhara, a whole abdomen ultrasound costs Rs. 1,500. This rate applies to Nepali citizens during regular service hours and may be revised over time. Please call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm the current rate before your visit, and ask about any additional tests your doctor may have requested.
Do I need to fast before a whole abdomen ultrasound?
Yes, most people are asked to fast for at least 6 hours before the scan, because an empty stomach keeps the gallbladder full and gives much clearer pictures. Small sips of plain water are usually allowed. You may also be asked to drink water and hold your urine so the bladder is full for the lower abdomen and pelvic views.
Is a whole abdomen ultrasound safe?
Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation, so it is considered very safe and can be repeated whenever your doctor feels it is needed. It has been used routinely in medicine for decades, including throughout pregnancy. No harmful effects are known when the test is performed by trained staff on standard equipment.
How long does the test take?
The scan itself usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how clearly each organ is seen and whether extra pictures are needed. Allow additional time for registration, waiting and report collection. Our team tells you when to collect the report.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
A referral letter is not compulsory, and many people book the scan directly by phone. That said, bringing your doctor's prescription and any previous reports is helpful, and we encourage you to discuss the results with a doctor who can interpret them alongside your symptoms, examination findings and blood tests rather than relying on the report alone.
What organs are seen in a whole abdomen ultrasound?
A whole abdomen ultrasound typically shows the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder and the large blood vessel called the aorta, along with the uterus and ovaries in women or the prostate area in men. The stomach and intestines are not seen well because gas within them blocks the sound waves.
Can I eat after the scan?
Yes. As soon as the scan is finished and the gel is wiped away, you can eat and drink normally and take your usual medicines. If you fasted and live some distance away, it is sensible to carry a snack with you. People with diabetes who take insulin should mention this when booking so an early slot can be arranged.
Will the scan show everything inside my abdomen?
Ultrasound shows many solid organs and fluid-filled structures very well, but no single test can show everything. Bowel gas, body build and other factors can limit the view of some areas. If the scan does not answer your doctor's question, further tests such as CT or MRI — both available at KDRC — may be advised.
