Venous and Arterial Doppler of Legs and Arms in Pokhara

In short

A limb Doppler is an ultrasound of the arteries or veins of one arm or leg. Venous Doppler looks for blood clots (DVT) and leaking valves behind varicose veins; arterial Doppler looks for narrowing or blockage causing leg pain on walking or poor healing. What is a limb Doppler?

Doppler ultrasound shows the vessels and measures how blood flows through them. It is done for one limb (left or right, arm or leg) and either the veins or the arteries:

  • Venous Doppler checks whether the deep veins compress normally (a clot stops them compressing) and whether the vein valves leak backwards (reflux), the cause of most varicose veins.
  • Arterial Doppler follows the arteries from the groin or shoulder down to the foot or hand, finding narrowing or blockage and measuring flow beyond it.

Why do doctors order a limb Doppler?

  • Suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT): a swollen, painful, warm calf or leg, especially after travel, surgery, pregnancy or bed rest.
  • Varicose veins before treatment, or leg heaviness, aching, skin changes or ulcers near the ankle.
  • Peripheral arterial disease: calf pain on walking that settles with rest (claudication), cold feet, weak pulses or a non-healing wound, common in diabetes and in smokers.
  • Follow-up after a clot or after vascular surgery.

A suspected clot with sudden breathlessness or chest pain is an emergency: go to the nearest emergency department immediately.

How much does a limb Doppler cost in Pokhara?

At KDRC, a Doppler ultrasound of one limb costs Rs. 3,000 for a single study, arterial or venous. Both legs, or arteries and veins together, are charged as separate studies. Rates are for Nepali citizens during regular service hours and may be revised. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm the price and preparation before your visit. Understanding your results

A venous report states whether a clot is present, where it is and whether it is new or old, and which veins show reflux and for how long. An arterial report describes where any narrowing or blockage is and how blood flows beyond it; the ankle-brachial index may be added. Your doctor uses the result to start blood thinners for a clot, plan varicose vein treatment, or refer you to a vascular surgeon, sometimes after CT angiography.

Why choose KDRC for a limb Doppler in Pokhara?

  • Consultant radiologists: studies are reported by our consultant radiologists, Dr. Bishworaj Bastakoti and Dr. Nawaraj Paudel, both NMC-registered radiologists since 2016 and members of the Nepal Radiologist Society. Meet them on our doctors page.
  • HD ultrasound with colour Doppler and 3D/4D/5D volume imaging on the same system.
  • Next steps on site: CT angiography on a 192-slice Siemens CT when arterial disease needs mapping before treatment.

What to expect at KDRC

Register with your doctor's request and earlier reports. Wear loose shorts or trousers that roll up easily for a leg study, or a sleeveless top for an arm. For a venous study of the leg you may be examined lying down and then standing, holding a support, so the radiologist can test the valves; you may be asked to take a deep breath and strain, or the calf may be squeezed briefly. For an arterial study you lie on your back while the radiologist follows the arteries from the groin to the ankle. The probe is pressed firmly over the veins to see whether they compress. A single-limb study usually takes 20 to 40 minutes. Our team tells you when to collect the report; if a clot is found, see your doctor the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a leg Doppler or DVT scan in Pokhara?

KDRC at Shantipath, Amarsingh Chowk, Pokhara-10 performs venous and arterial Doppler of the legs and arms on HD ultrasound, reported by consultant radiologists. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm a time.

How much does a limb Doppler cost in Pokhara?

At KDRC, a Doppler of one limb costs Rs. 3,000 for a single study, arterial or venous. Both legs, or arteries and veins together, are separate studies. Rates are for Nepali citizens during regular service hours and may be revised; call 061-553538 to confirm.

What is the difference between venous and arterial Doppler?

Venous Doppler checks the veins for clots and leaking valves, the cause of varicose veins and swelling. Arterial Doppler checks the arteries for narrowing that reduces blood supply, causing pain on walking or poor healing. Your doctor's request says which one you need.

Do I need to fast for a leg Doppler?

No. Eat and drink normally and take your medicines. Wear loose shorts or trousers that roll up above the knee.

Can a Doppler detect a blood clot in the leg?

Yes. Venous Doppler is the standard first test for deep vein thrombosis. A vein containing a clot does not squash flat when pressed with the probe and shows no normal flow.

Is a Doppler needed before varicose vein treatment?

Usually yes. It shows which veins are leaking and whether the deep veins are healthy, which helps the surgeon choose the right treatment.

Does the scan hurt?

It is generally painless, but pressing over a tender, clotted vein or squeezing the calf can be briefly uncomfortable. Tell the radiologist if you need a pause.
