What is a scrotal ultrasound?

A scrotal ultrasound uses a high-frequency probe to look at both testicles, the epididymis (the coiled tube behind each testicle), the spermatic cord and the scrotal wall. Colour Doppler shows blood flow, which helps detect infection, varicocele and, most urgently, torsion. Both sides are always compared.

Why do doctors order a scrotal ultrasound?

  • Swelling of the scrotum: hydrocele (fluid), hernia or a cyst.
  • A lump in or on a testicle.
  • Pain or tenderness, for example epididymo-orchitis (infection).
  • A dragging ache or 'bag of worms' feel: varicocele.
  • Infertility work-up, or a small or undescended testicle.
  • Injury to the scrotum.

Sudden severe testicular pain, especially in a boy or young man, may be torsion (a twisted testicle). This is a surgical emergency: go to the nearest emergency department immediately, as the testicle can be saved only within a few hours.

How much does a scrotal ultrasound cost in Pokhara?

At KDRC, a scrotal ultrasound costs Rs. 1,700. Rates are for Nepali citizens during regular service hours and may be revised. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm the price and preparation before your visit. See the full KDRC price list.

Understanding your results

The report describes the size and texture of each testicle, the epididymis, any fluid, cysts or dilated veins, and blood flow. Lumps outside the testicle (such as epididymal cysts) are almost always benign. A solid lump inside the testicle needs prompt review by a urologist, because testicular cancer, though uncommon, is most often seen in young men and is highly treatable when found early. A varicocele is graded and may be relevant to fertility.

What to expect at KDRC

Register with your doctor's request and any earlier reports. No fasting is needed. In a private room you lie on your back with a towel placed under the scrotum for support and another covering the penis. The radiologist moves the probe with warm gel gently over each side and uses colour Doppler to check blood flow. For a suspected varicocele you may be asked to take a deep breath and strain, or to stand for part of the scan. The examination is usually painless, though a tender area may be briefly uncomfortable. It typically takes 15 to 20 minutes. Our team tells you when to collect the report for your doctor or urologist.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a scrotal ultrasound in Pokhara?

KDRC at Shantipath, Amarsingh Chowk, Pokhara-10 performs scrotal ultrasound with colour Doppler in a private room, reported by consultant radiologists. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm a time.

How much does a scrotal ultrasound cost in Pokhara?

At KDRC, a scrotal ultrasound costs Rs. 1,700. Rates are for Nepali citizens during regular service hours and may be revised. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm before your visit.

Is a scrotal ultrasound painful?

No. Only gentle pressure is used. If the area is already tender from infection or injury, the radiologist works carefully and you can ask for a pause.

Can a scrotal ultrasound detect a varicocele?

Yes. Colour Doppler shows the dilated veins and whether blood flows backwards when you strain or stand, which is used to grade the varicocele.

What should I do with sudden testicular pain?

Go to the nearest emergency department straight away. Sudden severe pain can be torsion, which needs surgery within hours to save the testicle. Do not wait for a routine scan appointment.

Do I need any preparation?

No. Eat and drink normally and wear comfortable clothing. Bring your doctor's request and any earlier scans or semen analysis reports.
