What is a neck ultrasound?

A neck ultrasound uses a high-frequency probe to look at structures just under the skin. It is the best first imaging test for the thyroid gland: it measures each lobe, shows nodules and cysts and their features, and shows the overall texture of the gland in conditions such as thyroiditis. The same scan examines the lymph nodes, the salivary glands (parotid and submandibular) and any lump or swelling. A 'small part' at KDRC also covers other single superficial areas, such as a lump on the body wall or a soft-tissue swelling.

Why do doctors order a neck ultrasound?

  • A lump or swelling in the neck, or a goitre.
  • Abnormal thyroid blood tests (TSH, T3, T4), overactive or underactive thyroid.
  • Enlarged or persistent lymph nodes.
  • Swelling or pain of a salivary gland, or suspected stones.
  • Follow-up of known thyroid nodules, or after thyroid surgery.
  • To guide FNAC of a nodule or node.

How much does a neck or thyroid ultrasound cost in Pokhara?

At KDRC, a neck or small-part ultrasound costs Rs. 1,700. If a needle sample is needed, ultrasound-guided FNA is Rs. 2,000, or Rs. 3,700 with cytology. Rates are for Nepali citizens during regular service hours and may be revised. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm the price and preparation before your visit. Understanding your results

Thyroid nodules are very common and most are benign. The report describes each nodule's size, composition (solid or cystic), echogenicity, margins, shape and any calcification, often with a TI-RADS category that estimates the chance of cancer and whether a needle sample is advised. Lymph nodes are described by size, shape and whether their normal fatty centre is preserved. Your doctor uses the report, with your blood tests, to decide on treatment, follow-up scans or FNAC.

What to expect at KDRC

Register with your doctor's request, thyroid blood tests and earlier scans. No fasting is needed. Remove necklaces and earrings. You lie on your back with a small pillow under your shoulders so your neck is gently extended. The radiologist moves the probe with gel across the front and sides of your neck, measuring the thyroid and checking the lymph nodes and salivary glands. You may be asked to swallow once or turn your head. The scan is painless and usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. If a needle sample is needed, the radiologist explains this and it may be arranged the same day. Our team tells you when to collect the report.

KDRC at Shantipath, Amarsingh Chowk, Pokhara-10 performs thyroid and neck ultrasound on a high-frequency HD probe, reported by consultant radiologists. Ultrasound services run any day of the week. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm a time.

How much does a thyroid or neck ultrasound cost in Pokhara?

Do I need to fast for a thyroid ultrasound?

No. There is no preparation. Eat normally, take your thyroid medicines as usual and remove necklaces before the scan.

Are thyroid nodules cancer?

Most are not. Thyroid nodules are very common, especially in women, and the large majority are benign. Ultrasound features decide whether a nodule simply needs follow-up or a needle sample (FNAC).

What is TI-RADS?

TI-RADS is a scoring system radiologists use to describe thyroid nodules on ultrasound. It combines several features into a category that guides whether FNAC or follow-up is recommended, depending on the nodule's size.

Can the same scan check a lump elsewhere?

A small-part ultrasound covers one superficial area. A lump in a different area, such as the breast or scrotum, has its own dedicated scan. Tell staff exactly what your doctor has requested when booking.
