Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) of the Prostate in Pokhara
A transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) uses a slim probe placed in the back passage to examine the prostate and seminal vesicles closely. It measures prostate volume, shows enlargement, abscess or suspicious areas and helps work up raised PSA and infertility. KDRC in Pokhara performs transrectal ultrasound for Rs. 3,000.

What is a transrectal ultrasound?
The prostate sits just in front of the rectum, so a probe in the rectum gives a much clearer and more accurate view than scanning through the abdomen. TRUS measures the prostate in three dimensions to calculate its volume (useful for choosing treatment for enlargement and for PSA density), shows the internal zones, and examines the seminal vesicles and ejaculatory ducts.
Why do doctors order a TRUS?
- Urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia): weak stream, frequency, getting up at night.
- A raised PSA blood test or an abnormal rectal examination, as part of prostate cancer assessment.
- Suspected prostate abscess or chronic prostatitis.
- Male infertility with low or absent sperm, to look for blocked ejaculatory ducts.
- Blood in the semen.
TRUS shows the prostate's size and structure, but ultrasound alone cannot confirm or exclude cancer; your urologist may advise MRI of the prostate and a biopsy.
How much does a transrectal ultrasound cost in Pokhara?

Understanding your results
The report gives the prostate volume in millilitres (a normal adult prostate is roughly 20 to 30 ml), describes the gland's texture and any nodules, cysts, calcification or abscess, and comments on the seminal vesicles. Volume helps your urologist choose medicines or surgery for enlargement and calculate PSA density. Suspicious areas are followed up with MRI or biopsy as your urologist advises.

What to expect at KDRC
Register with your doctor's request, PSA results and earlier scans. You may be advised to use a small enema or empty your bowels beforehand, and to come with a moderately full bladder if an abdominal scan is added. The procedure is explained and you give consent. In a private room you lie on your left side with your knees drawn up. The doctor gently inserts a slim, lubricated probe covered with a fresh sterile sheath into the back passage. You will feel pressure and may feel the urge to open your bowels, but it should not be painful. The scan usually takes 15 to 20 minutes, and you can eat, drink and go home straight afterwards. Our team tells you when to collect the report.

Can TRUS detect prostate cancer?
It can show areas that look suspicious, but ultrasound alone cannot confirm or rule out cancer. Your urologist uses your PSA, examination, TRUS and often an MRI to decide whether a biopsy is needed.
What is a normal prostate size?
A normal adult prostate is roughly 20 to 30 ml. It commonly enlarges with age. Size alone does not decide treatment; your urologist considers your symptoms and urine flow too.
