What is a growth scan?

A growth scan is an obstetric ultrasound that checks how your baby is growing. The radiologist measures the baby's head (biparietal diameter and head circumference), abdomen (abdominal circumference) and thigh bone (femur length). From these measurements the machine calculates an estimated fetal weight, which is compared with the expected range for the week of pregnancy.

The same scan checks the amount of amniotic fluid, where the placenta lies, the baby's position (head down or breech) and the baby's heartbeat and movements. It is usually done in the third trimester, after about 28 weeks, but your doctor may ask for it at any stage after the anomaly scan.

Why do doctors order a growth scan?

Many doctors in Nepal request at least one growth scan late in pregnancy. A growth scan is especially useful when:

  • the bump measures smaller or larger than expected for the dates;
  • the mother has high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, diabetes, thyroid disease or anaemia;
  • an earlier baby was small, or there has been a previous stillbirth;
  • the baby's movements have reduced;
  • it is a twin pregnancy, or the placenta was low on an earlier scan;
  • the doctor needs to know the baby's position before planning delivery.

If growth is slowing, your doctor may add an obstetric Doppler to check blood flow through the cord, or a biophysical profile to check the baby's wellbeing.

How much does a growth scan cost in Pokhara?

At KDRC, an obstetric growth scan costs Rs. 1,500. Rates are for Nepali citizens during regular service hours and may be revised. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm the price and preparation before your visit. See the full KDRC price list.

Understanding your results

The report lists each measurement, the estimated fetal weight and its centile, the amniotic fluid level, the placental position and the presentation. A baby measuring below about the 10th centile is called small for gestational age; above about the 90th centile, large for gestational age. Estimated weight on ultrasound has a margin of error of roughly 10 to 15 percent, so a single result is a guide, not an exact weight. Your obstetrician interprets the trend across scans together with your health and decides whether more monitoring is needed.

  • Bring your antenatal card, your doctor's request and all earlier scan reports.
  • Tell staff if lying flat makes you dizzy; you can be tilted to one side.

How long it takes

A growth scan usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes, a little longer if the baby's position makes measurements difficult.

What to expect at KDRC

Bring your antenatal card, your doctor's request and earlier scan reports, and register at reception. You do not need a full bladder for a third-trimester scan. In the scan room you lie on your back with a pillow, or tilted slightly to the side if lying flat makes you dizzy. Warm gel is put on your bump and the radiologist moves the probe to measure the baby's head, abdomen and thigh bone, check the fluid and placenta and watch the heartbeat. Most growth scans take about 15 to 20 minutes, a little longer if the baby is in an awkward position. You are welcome to ask questions while the radiologist works. Our team tells you when to collect the printed report and images, which you take back to your obstetrician.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a growth scan in Pokhara?

KDRC at Shantipath, Amarsingh Chowk, Pokhara-10 performs obstetric growth scans on HD ultrasound, reported by consultant radiologists. Ultrasound services run any day of the week. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm a time, and bring your antenatal card and earlier scan reports.

How much does a growth scan cost in Pokhara?

At KDRC, an obstetric growth scan costs Rs. 1,500. Rates are for Nepali citizens during regular service hours and may be revised. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to confirm before your visit.

When should a growth scan be done?

Most growth scans are done in the third trimester, after about 28 weeks. Your doctor may request one earlier, or several at intervals, if the bump is smaller or larger than expected, you have high blood pressure or diabetes, or it is a twin pregnancy.

Do I need a full bladder for a growth scan?

No. Late in pregnancy the womb rises out of the pelvis and the baby is seen clearly without a full bladder. Eat and drink normally and wear loose two-piece clothing so the bump is easy to reach.

How accurate is the baby's weight on a growth scan?

Ultrasound estimates weight from measurements, so it can be about 10 to 15 percent above or below the true birth weight. That is why doctors look at the trend over several scans rather than one number.

What happens if my baby is small on the scan?

Your doctor may repeat the growth scan in two weeks and add an obstetric Doppler or biophysical profile to check the baby's wellbeing. Many small babies are healthy and simply constitutionally small; the follow-up tests help your doctor tell the difference.

Is a growth scan the same as an anomaly scan?

No. The anomaly scan at about 18 to 22 weeks looks at the baby's organs and structure in detail. A growth scan later in pregnancy focuses on size, fluid, placenta and position.

Is ultrasound safe for my baby?

Diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and has been used in pregnancy for decades. It is considered safe when done for a medical reason by trained staff, as at KDRC.
