Renal Doppler Ultrasound in Pokhara
A renal Doppler is an ultrasound of the kidneys that measures blood flow in the renal arteries and veins. It looks for narrowing of the kidney arteries (renal artery stenosis) as a cause of high blood pressure, checks transplanted kidneys and assesses kidney disease. KDRC in Pokhara performs renal Doppler for Rs. 3,000.

What is a renal Doppler?
A renal Doppler combines a standard kidney ultrasound with Doppler measurements of blood flow. The radiologist measures the size and structure of both kidneys, then follows the renal arteries from the aorta into each kidney, recording the peak systolic velocity and the resistive index (RI) in the small arteries inside the kidney. The renal veins are checked for clots.
Why do doctors order a renal Doppler?
- Hard-to-control high blood pressure, especially in younger people or when it starts suddenly, to look for renal artery stenosis.
- Kidney function that falls after starting blood pressure medicines such as ACE inhibitors.
- One kidney smaller than the other on an earlier abdominal ultrasound.
- Follow-up of a kidney transplant.
- Suspected renal vein thrombosis.
- Chronic kidney disease, where the resistive index adds information.
How much does a renal Doppler cost in Pokhara?

Understanding your results
The report gives kidney size, the appearance of each kidney and the Doppler values. A renal artery peak velocity above about 180 to 200 cm/s, or a high ratio compared with the aorta, suggests significant narrowing. A resistive index above about 0.7 inside the kidney is considered raised and is seen in several kidney diseases. If narrowing is suspected, your doctor may advise CT angiography to confirm it. Renal Doppler can be technically difficult in some people because of bowel gas or body build, which the report will mention.
Why choose KDRC for a renal Doppler in Pokhara?

- HD ultrasound with colour Doppler and 3D/4D/5D volume imaging on the same system.
- Next steps on site: CT angiography on a 192-slice Siemens CT if the Doppler suggests narrowing.
- Central location: Shantipath, Amarsingh Chowk, Pokhara-10. Ultrasound services run any day of the week; call to confirm a time.

What to expect at KDRC
Fast for 6 to 8 hours before your appointment so that bowel gas does not hide the renal arteries; you may sip plain water and take your usual medicines. Register with your doctor's request, recent kidney function blood tests and earlier scans. You lie on your back and then on each side while the radiologist scans your abdomen and flanks with gel. You will be asked to hold your breath several times for a few seconds while flow is measured, and you may hear the sound of blood flow. Because the renal arteries are deep, the study takes time and patience: usually 30 to 45 minutes. Our team tells you when to collect the report.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I get a renal Doppler in Pokhara?
KDRC at Shantipath, Amarsingh Chowk, Pokhara-10 performs renal Doppler on HD ultrasound with colour Doppler, reported by consultant radiologists. Call 061-553538 or 9856077433 (Viber) to book and get fasting instructions.

Do I need to fast for a renal Doppler?
Yes. Fast for 6 to 8 hours so the stomach and bowel contain less gas, which can hide the kidney arteries. Small sips of water and your usual medicines are fine; people with diabetes should ask staff for advice.
Can renal Doppler find the cause of high blood pressure?
It can show narrowing of the kidney arteries, which is one treatable cause of high blood pressure. Most high blood pressure has no single cause, so a normal renal Doppler is common and still useful.
What is the resistive index?
The resistive index compares blood flow during and between heartbeats in the small arteries inside the kidney. Values up to about 0.7 are usually normal; higher values suggest increased resistance seen in several kidney conditions.
Is a renal Doppler the same as a KUB ultrasound?
No. A KUB or abdominal ultrasound shows the kidneys' size and structure, stones and swelling. A renal Doppler adds blood-flow measurements of the arteries and veins and takes longer.
